Description: In 2018, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) adopted significant revisions to the U.S. GAAP insurance accounting literature, via Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2018-12. The title of ASU 2018-12 is “Targeted Improvements to the Accounting for Long-Duration Contracts,” and as a result, a common acronym for ASU 2018-12 is LDTI (long-duration targeted improvements).

Description: This session is targeted for new ASAs/FSAs or actuaries who are new to reserving. The session will be delivered in two parts. The first part is intended to deliver a basic understanding of IBNR reserving and different reserving methods and assumptions. We will go through examples of constructing claims triangles and developing completion factors, while exploring concepts such as seasonality, trend and outlier claims. During the second part of the session, we will apply the material from the first part to look at various example from different products such as inpatient, outpatient, RX, Medicare Supplement, dental, critical illness, etc.

Description: This paper examines five alternative valuation methods - prospective, retrospective, global, intermediate, and static - for the proper application of GAAP to Medicare supplement insurance. The focus of this paper is on the changes to expected future claim costs due to changes in the Medicare deductibles.
